inSORS Connects Research Drill Ship via Satellite
November 1, 2004
College Station, TX – inSORS Integrated Communications, Inc., a Chicago-based collaboration software and solutions provider specializing in multi-group video, audio, and data communications, recently deployed four inSORS Grid systems for use in oceanographic research with the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP).
IODP is an international research group exploring the history and structure of the earth as recorded in the ocean floor rocks sediments. The group includes several institutions in the US, including the National Science Foundation’s Joint Oceanographic Institutes (JOI), Texas A&M University, and Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. IODP also operates several research vessels, including drill ships and mission-specific research ships operating all over the world.
IODP plans to install inSORS solutions at Texas A&M, JOI, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and on their riserless drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution. While the three terrestrial locations have access to high-bandwidth fiber IP connections, the drill ship is limited to a low-bandwidth satellite connection. IODP chose the inSORS Grid solution because of its scalability from low to high-bandwidth connections in the same session and because of proven success on other drill ships operated by a major oil company connected via satellite.
inSORS, based in Chicago with offices in Houston, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Detroit, New York, London, and Tokyo, develops, markets, and supports scalable unified collaboration software and solutions that enable multiple groups and individuals to collaborate with high-quality audio, video, and data over existing network infrastructure.
The inSORS Grid solutions provide innovative state-of-the-art conferencing and collaboration tools that integrate a wide range of communications systems into a simple, easy-to-use platform. inSORS solutions include server and client software, documentation and support, and comprehensive services including installation, network and collaboration consulting, and training.
