Great Western Research Project in UK to use inSORS Grid Solution as Collaboration Tool, Connecting Researchers and Enterpise

(October 14, 2006 United Kingdom)  inSORS Communications is pleased to announce another UK based distributed research project, the Great Western Research (GWR) project, is using the inSORS Grid 2 or “IG2” platform for immersive collaborations.  The IG2 is a software based multipoint video, audio and data sharing system.  The IG2 runs on any standard PC and over any IP network including the Public Internet.  The fundamental concept of Great Western Research is to promote collaborations between the highest quality research groups in the South West of England and regional businesses in order to attract international interest and recognition and to support the growth of the South West of England.   The IG2 is ideally suited for this type of distributed research project.

To achieve the high levels of collaboration that GWR demand they have chosen inSORS to provide them with 8 collaborative rooms 6 of which are fixed room systems and 2 are mobile room systems and 32 instances of the personal node IG software to allow desktop and laptop users to collaborate at the same time. The Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) set to benefit from using the IG software are:

University of Bath, Bath Spa University, Arts Institute of Bournemouth, Bournemouth University, University of Bristol, Dartington College of Arts, University of Exeter, University College Falmouth, University of Gloucester, University of Plymouth, College of St Mark and St John, Royal Agricultural College, University of West of England.

As part of its programme GWR is setting up a South West regional postgraduate training network, funded by HEFCE, and has chosen the inSORS grid system as a platform to deliver state of the art distributed training sessions and research conference facilities to the 13 Higher Education Institutions in the South West. A total of over £ 1.1Million is being invested in three hubs based at Bath, Bristol and Exeter Universities. This will provide new inSORS nodes at Bath and Exeter, and enhance and extend existing and planned nodes at Bristol including the installation of two nodes in the Wickham Theatre performance venue. Additionally, all South West HEIs will be provided with the means to access the grid via desk top systems.

The Executive Director of GWR Dr David Billington said “using the IG2 will allow GWR to provide distributed postgraduate training to all of the 13 HEIs which are spread widely across the South West, and also enable us to provide our thriving research community with a state of the art system for communication and collaboration.”
