The University of Birmingham Expands IG2 Deployment

December 27, 2005

(Birmingham, UK) The Primary Care Department at the University of Birmingham Medical School has deployed the inSORS Grid distributed collaboration solution. The Primary Care Department will use the IG2 system to collaborate with partners in both the UK and the United States on critical medical issues affecting doctors today. The room based IG node is one of many currently deployed throughout the UK’s e-Science community.

The School of Medicine at the University of Birmingham is a major international center for research and education in medicine and medical sciences. In recent years the School has expanded dramatically, and now has one of the largest intakes of undergraduate students in the UK (450/year), and employs over 1000 teaching, research, technical, support and administrative staff. Since 1998, the School has begun a £73 million program to improve and expand its research and teaching facilities, with the aim of advancing its position at the forefront of developments in medical science. At the end of 2003 the £30m Institute of Biomedical Research was occupied and it is anticipated that the new state-of-the-art £11.8m Student Facilities Building will be completed by October 2005. The School has centers of excellence in cancer, immunology, cardiovascular disease, neuroscience and endocrinology and provides an environment in which basic and clinical scientists work together to find cures and treatments for major diseases.
