March 19, 2008 // Chicago – With their IG software platform, IOCOM delivers on the promise of "Whenever and Wherever" visual communication at affordable rates and on existing infrastructures.
In contrast to the expensive, high-end telepresence rooms built entirely of commodity equipment being offered by other companies, IOCOM's software solution lets you instantly communicate from desktops, laptops, UMPC's, as well as high-end conference rooms working off of existing infrastructure, using existing hardware devices. Among the features offered by the IG software:
Multipoint video from all sites at customizable resolutions (including High Definition)
Telepresence rooms, on the other hand, limit customers to expensive, inflexible rooms that can be used only by the limited number of participants at the right place at the right time.
Microsoft has made clear that it does not see telepresence as the movement of the future. At the VoiceCon Orlando 2008 conference, Gurdeep Singh Pall, Microsoft's vice president of the unified communications group, said, "What's next? Are they going to be selling you the chairs and the tables and the buildings?"
Avaya CEO Lou D'Ambrosio made the similar point in an interview with InformationWeek. "If you buy two of these videoconferencing solutions that cost $300,000, you may be able to get [only] 20 to 30 people using the system," he said.
In contrast, IOCOM offers a solution that installs on computers that are already in use, thereby integrating seamlessly with the way people are already working. Brian Gleason, IOCOM Executive Vice-President, noted that "although we enjoy some of the buzz surrounding Telepresence, as our conference rooms provide much of the feel and functionality, we are quick to point out the scalability and flexibility of our Unified Visual Communication solutions. From telepresence rooms, executive offices, desktops, laptops, or handhelds, with IOCOM, you can have it all."
